Joint Rejuvenation

Arthritis is a medical condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness of the joints. A couple of the most common joints affected are the knees and hips, but ultimately it can affect any joint in the body regardless of size. Arthritis of the knees can be an extremely uncomfortable and potentially debilitating disease.

Arthritis occurs when there is a breakdown of the smooth tissue called cartilage that covers the ends of the bones making up the joint. It functions as a cushion and keeps the bones from rubbing directly together. Unfortunately, as the cartilage wears away, the bones will begin to rub directly against one another. The result is a perpetual irritation that promotes inflammation within the joint space. This results in the development of pain, swelling and stiffness. These are just some of the classic signs that your joint is beginning to wear down.

For most sufferers, joint arthritis originates from one or a combination of three things. Overuse, a prior injury or a pre-existing medical condition that can directly impact the joint itself (ie., rheumatoid arthritis, auto-immune diseases, etc.).  Although there is no cure for knee arthritis or arthritis in general, there are measures that can be taken to help mitigate the effects of an arthritic joint and potentially regenerate the joint itself.

In most osteoarthritis cases involving the larger joints, the standard of care revolves around anti-inflammatory pain medications, steroid injections, synthetic lubricates, and when all fails, a total or partial joint replacement. Now imagine another option, one that involves joint rejuvenation in place of a joint replacement. My staff at Sheen Vein and Cosmetics have developed a unique program that can provide a highly effective treatment alternative for those individuals with arthritic joint problems not wanting surgery.

Joint Rejuvenation Program

This program involves a Two-step process:

  1. Pain Relief: Since osteoarthritis typically involves joint discomfort, the initial step in our program is to eliminate as much pain and discomfort in the joint as possible. This is important because a key component in the treatment process is for the individual to move the joint. Movement of the joint helps to harden the new cartilage when it develops. This process is quite simple and essentially painless. The process involves using a second generation photobiomodulation treatment know as High Intensity Light Therapy or HILLT for short. HILLT uses infra-Red light energy to enhance the cellular activity within the joint tissue. This results in increased tissue blood flow, decreased inflammation and increased cellular protein production within the tissue; all of which are essential for tissue healing. Joint discomfort dissipates typically within a few treatments. Once the arthritic discomfort has resolved, the program now progresses to the next step, cartilage rejuvenation.
  2. Cartilage rejuvenation: Cartilage is a live tissue and as a result, it has some element of blood flow. The reason cartilage does not regenerate quickly is because this blood flow is limited when compared to regular tissue. The less blood flow, the longer it will take for a tissue to heal. This is precisely why our cartilage rejuvenation program take place over a period of 12 months. This allows the cartilage to regrow slowly over time. The process involves the use of Platelet-rich plasma, a concentrated platelet solution that when injected into damaged tissue, can help accelerate tissue regeneration and healing. Platelet-rich plasma has been used periodically over the years in sports medicine, but as we learn more about its functionality and versatility, its use has steadily grown and now extends into many facets of medical and cosmetic practice.

Risks and Side Effects

PRP related treatments are generally considered low-risk procedures with few if any major side effects. Since PRP originates from a person’s own blood, the typical side effect profiles involving allergic reactions do not apply unlike when using injectable medications like corticosteroids. Majority of the issues reported when performing PRP injections involve the actual blood draw process required to attain the sample. Some patients have reported feeling lightheaded and there may be some bruising at the site of the blood draw.
